On 27 April 2026, the first technical training of the China–Rwanda Belt and Road Joint Laboratory on Intelligent Transportation Infrastructure was held, paving the way for the operationalization of the laboratory, one of the key milestones in strengthening cooperation between Rwanda and China.
The training took place at the University of Rwanda, College of Science and Technology (UR-CST).
Established under the Belt and Road Initiative, the Joint Laboratory represents a significant step forward in deepening bilateral collaboration. More importantly, it provides a strategic platform that brings together government, academia, and industry to collectively address challenges and opportunities in modern transportation systems.
In his remarks, the Principal of the College of Science and Technology expressed sincere appreciation to the Government of the People’s Republic of China for its continued partnership and unwavering support for Rwanda’s development journey.
“For Rwanda, the development of intelligent, efficient, and resilient transport infrastructure is central to achieving our national development aspirations. As we advance towards a knowledge-based and technology-driven economy, we must embrace innovative solutions,” he said.
The Joint Laboratory is expected to serve as a hub for joint research programs addressing real-world infrastructure challenges, facilitate technology transfer and the localization of innovative solutions, promote academic and professional exchange among institutions, and support the development of data-driven approaches to transport planning and management, among other objectives.
Participants emphasized that collaboration among national agencies, industry partners, and both public and private universities will be essential. By aligning research with practical needs, they noted, the knowledge generated can be translated into implementable solutions that directly benefit citizens and the economy.
During the training, participants actively engaged, shared experiences, and explored opportunities for long-term collaboration. The networks and ideas developed are expected to extend far beyond the workshop and contribute to tangible improvements in infrastructure systems.
