11 Mar 2022

This Friday March 11th, 2022, at UR Nyarugenge Campus, in line with the International Day of Mathematics, selected High Schools’ students in Kigali sat for an exam in Mathematics during a nationwide competition organized at District level. The competition was organized by the UR CST in collaboration with the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS-Kigali), the UR Sweden Programme, the International Science Programme (ISP) through the Eastern Africa Universities Mathematics Programme (EAUMP-UR Node), and the East African Institute for Fundamental Research (EAIFR-ICTP).

In Kigali City, the competition was attended by a total number of 194 students comprising 98 female and 96 male from 19 High Secondary Schools.
According to Dr. Banzi Wellars, the Deputy Dean of School of Science at UR CST and supervisor of Kigali site, the competition went well as long as no incident happened. He added that students were eager to attend because they arrived on time and had time to get ready for the exam.

One of the participants, Miss Tuyishimire Alice from Lycée Notre Dame de Citeaux, said that the competition was great for her. She was happy and confident during the exam because she faced questions almost the same with ones she encounters in class. She called upon youth and specifically female students to study Mathematics because according to her “Mathematics is life, and all is centered on Mathematics”.
Iratuzi Josue from College Saint Andre expressed his joy to be part of the competition. “I am humbled and honored to take part in this competition. I am also thankful to the organizers of this competition because this shows that they consider us as people who can compete not only at District level but at Global level and we hope to qualify as best”, he said.

The next stage of the competition at Province level is scheduled 29th April 2022. It will be followed by the final one on 25th May 2022, the day which the International Day of Mathematics (PI-Day) in Rwanda will be celebrated and it will be marked by winners award prices.
